Lesson Overview:
The Motif Glow-Up: 3 Quick Fixes for Better Pattern Elements
Sometimes a pattern looks pretty - but still feels a little off. In this lesson, we’re digging into why that happens and how to fix it.
We’ll look at three of the most common beginner mistakes that quietly sabotage a design’s impact: flat motif variety, inconsistent line weight, and the lack of visual hierarchy. I’ll even show you one of my own older designs (yes, it’s a little cringe 😅) to walk you through exactly what went wrong - and how I gave it a major glow-up.
By the end, you’ll know how to:
-
Audit your motifs for variety and role
-
Spot inconsistent line work (and fix it!)
-
Create better flow and focal points in your pattern
This lesson sets the foundation for everything that comes next - because before your pattern can sing, it needs strong bones.
Meet the teacher
Hi there, I'm Jillian.
I’m a surface pattern designer, illustrator, and your friendly neighborhood pattern bestie.
I’ve supported hundreds of surface designers in courses, coaching calls, and communities—and I’ve seen the same pattern problems come up again and again (because I struggled with them too).
This free workshop is your shortcut to solving them.
No fluff.
No gatekeeping.
Just the good stuff. 😘
